Siphon pipes being floated into Cork Harbour,
IrelandThe Cork Main Drainage Scheme is one of the
largest engineering and environmental projects ever undertaken by a
Local Authority in Ireland, representing an investment of in excess
of €300million in wastewater collection and treatment
infrastructure for Cork City.
Main elements of the scheme included a 2.6km tunnelled interceptor
sewer, a pumping station delivering 2.45m³/s, a 3.5km inverted twin
siphon across Lough Mahon Estuary and a wastewater treatment plant
serving a population equivalent of 460,000 and treated effluent
outfall to Cork Harbour.
Mott MacDonald Pettit was appointed as Consulting Engineers for the
whole of the project which was procured under 25 separate contracts
ranging in value from €0.7million to €90million.
The scope of work included preparation of the Preliminary Report
and the Environmental Impact Assessment, steering the scheme
through planning and on to detailed design, tender assessment and
contract supervision for the foul sewer and storm sewer networks,
pumping stations, mechanical and electrical installations and
wastewater treatment facilities.
