The Public Authority for Industry operates seawater pumping
stations within the Shuaiba Industrial Area to provide cooling
water for the industries located there. This project involved the
construction of a new pumping station (Pumping Plant ‘D’),
refurbishment of existing Pumping Plant ‘C’ and the cleaning of the
intake conduits of existing Pumping Plants ‘B’ and ‘C’.
The new Pumping Plant ‘D’, with a capacity of 40m3/s,
includes a long sea intake, a pumping station and 3km pumped
delivery main and gravity return culvert. The pumping station will
be equipped with a chlorination facility for anti-fouling and
standby power generation. An administration building, a mosque,
workshops and other associated buildings will also be constructed.
The refurbishment of existing Pumping Plant ‘C’, involves the
uprating of seven existing pumps and the addition of four new
pumps, each pump rated at approximately 4.5m3/s at 55m
head. Ancillary work includes the replacement of screening
equipment, pipework and valves and the refurbishment of
chlorination equipment, electrical switchgear and the control
system. The pumping plant civil structure is to be extended and two
new pumping mains constructed.
Mott MacDonald’s role included preparation of feasibility studies
and the civil, mechanical, electrical and chemical design for the
refurbishment of Pumping Plant ‘C’ and the construction of Pumping
Plant ‘D’. Tender documents will be prepared for all three elements
of work and advice provided on tender award. Mott MacDonald will
provide site supervision for all three elements of work and provide
a further two years supervision of the operation and maintenance of
Pumping Plant ‘D’.
