Gates
Mott MacDonald’s experience in the design of water control gates,
valves and penstocks dates back to the mid-twentieth century with
flood protection for the River Ouse and has continued to grow over
the years, culminating in the development of many new, modified and
rehabilitated structures world-wide.
Groundwater development
We developed specialist skills in all areas of groundwater
engineering, encompassing well design (selection of appropriate
drilling methods, casing materials, screen and gravel), well
siting, and the selection of appropriate pump sets, power units and
control systems. Our engineers work closely with hydrogeologists,
mechanical engineers and water supply engineers to develop
appropriate designs for the construction of efficient and effective
wellfields.
Groundwater modelling
Mott MacDonald is a world leader in the application of groundwater
modelling techniques, and has developed its own powerful suite of
computer programs for the simulation of groundwater flow and
contaminant transport in a wide variety of situations.
Groundwater recharge
Mott MacDonald’s experience encompasses the full range of services
required for artificial recharge (AR) schemes including the more
specialised aspects applicable to aquifer storage recovery (ASR)
wellfields. Artificial recharge can fulfil a number of objectives,
including reversal of groundwater decline, improvement in water
quality and increase in groundwater storage. Services such as
hydrogeological or environmental assessment, dam and water resource
engineering, groundwater modelling and data management or
visualisation are common to many of our assignments.
Headroom analysis
Mott MacDonald has extensive recent experience of headroom
uncertainty modelling and has developed headroom uncertainty models
using both @Risk and Crystal Ball software for a number of major UK
water companies. In particular, Mott MacDonald was responsible for
the preparation of the 2003 UKWIR headroom methodology.
Hydrology
Mott MacDonald has successfully undertaken a very wide range of
specialist hydrological studies throughout the world, providing
detailed analysis for diverse applications for a wide variety of
climates. Our expertise has particularly focused in the past on
arid/semi arid and temperate environments, although we also have
considerable experience in working in tropical environments.
Hydropower
Our hydropower team provides advice on all aspects of all types
of hydroelectric power developments such as run of river and pumped
storage.
Industrial effluent treatment
Mott MacDonald is also experienced in the design, procurement
and provision of industrial effluent treatment plant. Our designs
include technology appropriate to the degree and type of treatment
required. Designs are usually based on laboratory or pilot scale
testing undertaken to determine the most appropriate type of
treatment to achieve the effluent quality required.
Institutional Strengthening
Mott MacDonald, as a part of its multidisciplinary capacity, has
the capacity to assist the public sector in general and local and
regional governments in particular to upgrade their
capabilities.
Irrigation and drainage
Mott MacDonald’s experience in irrigation and drainage dates back
over 70 years and encompasses all forms of irrigation. We have been
engaged in policy and planning studies, implementation and
management of irrigation in 30 countries in the last decade
alone.
Land Drainage
Mott MacDonald frequently undertakes land drainage projects, either
as an integral part of a new irrigation development or as
rehabilitation measures on an existing scheme.
Landscape design
Mott MacDonald’s landscape and ecology team prides itself on its
role in the integration of civil engineering with landscape and
natural habitats. We are acknowledged leaders in nature
conservation and sympathetic landscaping schemes with considerable
experience in river engineering, and the greening of roads,
reservoirs, coal mines, gravel pits, sea walls, sewage works,
shopping complexes, industrial estates and housing.
Leakage control
Mott MacDonald has undertaken many projects relating to water
distribution systems management. Leakage control policy studies and
implementation are key elements of these projects. The emphasis for
leakage control projects is on reducing leakage in order to make
scarce water available for use elsewhere.
Lender’s engineer
Mott MacDonald has been entrusted with numerous commissions to
advise lenders to project sponsors of Build – Operate – Transfer
(BOT) schemes or concession operators.
Low-cost sanitation
Mott MacDonald’s experience of low-cost sanitation has often been
as part of wider rural development projects. Key to their success
is the involvement of stakeholders in the development of projects.
