Rehabilitation of infrastructure
We undertake the all aspects of rehabilitation of water infrastructure from initial studies, to design and implementation. Our work often allows the optimisation of water assets.

Reservoir Inspections
Mott MacDonald has engineers that are qualified under the All Reservoirs Panel of Engineers - Reservoirs Act 1975 to undertake reservoir inspections.

Risk management
Risk management processes are an integral and formal part of business and project management. The processes address uncertainties in terms of downside risk and upside opportunities. We apply best practice risk management processes to manage risks and opportunities on projects.

River basin management
Large or small, rural or industrialised, maritime or continental, at Mott MacDonald we have been engaged in all aspects of river basin management around the world.

River engineering
We are able to offer a wide range of services in river engineering. These have ranged from major flood alleviation schemes to bank protection works and studies of dredging requirements.

Rural development
Mott MacDonald has a wide experience in all aspects of the rural development project cycle. In recent years much of our work has encompassed the livelihoods approach to development, with emphasis not only on the social and technical, but also the economic aspects of development to ensure longer-term sustainability.

Rural water supply
Mott MacDonald’s range of water supply work has been diverse. Examples include: inventories of existing water sources with community participation to design/place new sources; development of village-based maintenance; PRA, sociological/health surveys; the use of animations and role plays; groundwater pollution/potability studies, use of local pumps; groundwater modelling and aquifer recharge studies, water quality testing, pollution control; gender studies on water collection and use.

Salinity
The management of water and salt within irrigated lands in arid and semi-arid climates is an area where Mott MacDonald has been a respected authority for many years.

SCADA
We have considerable experience in SCADA system application and in the specification and configuration of SCADA systems. Mott MacDonald has worked with all of the market leader SCADA software packages with the aim of creating user-friendly operator interfaces at control room and plant level in order to provide plant status detail, trends, reports and to archive selected data. Our SCADA systems range from single site to multi-site and multi-database systems, used on large water and wastewater treatment schemes and pipelines.

Seawater cooling system
All the phases of seawater cooling projects, including initial feasibility studies, Front End Engineering Document (FEED) Engineering, production of associated Procurement Package Documentation, and finally Construction Supervision on site.

Service reservoirs
Storage reservoirs and tanks are required throughout the water and wastewater industry in many forms. Mott MacDonald has extensive experience in these facilities and is able to offer comprehensive services in their planning, design, supervision of construction, testing and commissioning, operation, inspection and maintenance.

Sewer infiltration studies
These are regularly undertaken as part of our work on sewerage projects worldwide. Modelling of the sewer system can be part of these studies.

Sewers and drainage
Our many years’ experience in the planning, design and construction supervision of sewerage schemes throughout the world includes schemes ranging in size from the very largest-scale projects for major cities to small projects for isolated communities. Projects have included gravity collection, pumped transfer, and rehabilitation studies.

Sludge treatment and management
Mott MacDonald has extensive experience of alternative treatment processes for sludge treatment and is undertaking leading edge work on biosolids treatment.

Stakeholder participation
The involvement of all stakeholders in a project (owners, funders, end-users, etc) enables water developments to be implemented to the satisfaction of those concerned. We have involved the participation of stakeholders on many projects implemented by us across the worldwide.

Strategic and regulatory advice
Strategic and regulatory advice has been provided by Mott MacDonald to a variety of clients across the world.

Surface water modelling
Surface water quality modelling is key to understanding the impact of both diffuse sources and point discharges on water quality. Water quality modelling solutions range from a simple spreadsheet approach, through the Monte-Carlo statistical method to fully hydrodynamic models. At Mott MacDonald, we aim to apply the most appropriate solution to meet the client’s needs. We carry out studies using commercially available software, software developed for a particular problem and our own in-house suite of ‘HYDRO’ models.

Surge analysis
Surge analysis capability allows consideration of transient pressures and system operation to be fully integrated into the overall design process. We regularly undertake surge analyses for our clients.

Sustainability
Sustainable development, with its aim of balancing the environmental, social and economic impacts of human activity, is by nature complex and this can form a barrier to its successful implementation. We are committed to integrating the key aspects of sustainable development into our operational practices and culture. We seek to be proactive, aiming to take sustainability into account in all our projects and business activities, and being a source of knowledge for our customers on sustainability issues.

Tariff studies
We have undertaken tariff studies for public and private sector enterprises for many years. Our work has involved the evaluation of the tariff implications for utilities of individual projects as well as to consider the overall financial position of a utility. We have also reviewed tariffs on an overall national scale.

Telemetry
Mott MacDonald is experienced in the design, documentation, development and testing of telemetry systems for water and wastewater plant.

Training
Training, technical assistance and transfer of knowledge to local staff are key aspects of many Mott MacDonald projects. Training can be provided both in the host country and in the United Kingdom or other Mott MacDonald centres.

Transaction adviser
With many of the world’s governments turning to the private sector to finance water and wastewater development, government entities are seeking assistance in the preparation and tendering procedures required to obtain value for money. Our long experience in the sector coupled with the large range of disciplines available within Mott MacDonald ensures we are well placed to provide a comprehensive service. Mott MacDonald has been entrusted with numerous commissions to advise authorities on the floating of Build – Own – Operate – Transfer or operation concessions into the private sector.

Transboundary River Management
Mott MacDonald has experience water quality management and related polluting impact in transboundary rivers and the complex issues that arise when dealing with these rivers.

Tunnelling››
Mott MacDonald has designed hydraulic tunnels that provide long-distance, inter-basin water transfer, or short tunnels that function as headrace or tailrace tunnels for hydropower generation or as diversion tunnels for dams. Transfer tunnels designed by Mott MacDonald include both lined and unlined tunnels. We also have a wide range of experience in trenchless technology including micro-tunnelling and pipe-jacking.
