UFW studies
Unaccounted for water, non-revenue water and leakage control
frequently form an element of water supply projects, reflecting the
cost-effectiveness of repairing and maintaining a system to
optimise water resources in preference to further resource
exploitation through capital works schemes. Mott MacDonald has
undertaken UFW studies for major cities throughout the world.
Urban drainage
Mott MacDonald has extensive experience in the investigation of
urban drainage problems, and the identification and implementation
of appropriate solutions to these problems. Investigations
undertaken in the past range from advice to individual property
owners to studies to develop drainage master plans for entire
cities.
Urban planning
We have won particular recognition in the planning and
implementation of urban and regional development projects. Our
service offering ranges from local level site planning to
integrated infrastructure development, master planning for urban
areas, new towns, industrial parks, urban readjustment and
regeneration.
Urban water supply
Mott MacDonald has been responsible for all aspects of
development of water supplies for urban areas throughout the world,
including the planning, asset management, design and construction
for small peri-urban areas, towns and cities including capital
cities and mega-cities such as Shanghai, Bangkok and Karachi.
Value management
Value management (VM) is part of the overall value culture of
Mott MacDonald, and essentially involves providing a structured
approach to adding value to a project by improving its function for
a given cost input. The facilitated VM workshops that occur at key
points in a project programme create a valuable forum for
mobilising key stakeholders in a project. Value Management is
increasingly required by clients, particularly in the UK water
industry, and is seen as an essential part of project procurement.
Wastewater pumping
Mott MacDonald has developed extensive world-wide knowledge and
experience of pumps and pumping stations working in the field of
sewage treatment. A variety of specialised process pumping
equipment has been designed and installed for blending and dosing a
wide range of chemicals.
Wastewater treatment
Mott MacDonald has extensive experience of wastewater
treatment ranging from the provision of complete treatment works to
replacement, upgrading and refurbishment of existing works. Our
designs incorporate the conventional treatment processes, such as
preliminary, primary, secondary and tertiary, compact small
footprint processes, such as lamella separators, BAFFS and other
proven leading edge technologies appropriate for the specific
applications.
Water framework directive
Mott MacDonald has considerable experience of undertaking projects
to meet the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive.
Water governance
At a time when water is an ever-pressing issue on the world
stage, the ability of governments, cities, municipalities, rural
communities, private enterprise and civil society to mobilise their
collective skill and financial resources to make progress is
fundamental to making much-needed progress.
Water law
Sound water laws and systems of compliance are a cornerstone of
sustainable water management. Mott MacDonald has worked on a number
of recent studies to improve water legislation to ensure that it
meets the requirements for promoting sustainable and equitable use
of water resources, for protecting water quantity and quality, and
satisfying the requirements of aquatic ecosystems and hence
facilitating sustainable development.

Water resources planning
We have been undertaking water resource projects for over
70 years.
Water supply systems
rehabilitation
Our considerable expertise in the rehabilitation of water supply
systems includes studies, designs and implementation works.
Investigations may cover water quality, pipe bursts, pipe condition
assessments, customer complaints and perceptions.
Water treatment
Mott MacDonald has considerable experience in the design,
specification and performance monitoring of water treatment works.
We have particular expertise in the design, manufacture and
operation of process pilot plant. We have been involved with
numerous process studies and our broad experience of water
treatment processes means that we can bring a wealth of theoretical
and practical experience to bear. We can offer advice on day-to-day
process problems to ensure efficient and effective plant operation;
ensuring high quality treated water and optimal use of
chemicals.
Water quality
The quality of water in rivers and lakes is of increasing
concern to governments and water users, especially environmental
regulators and those interested in the ecology of rivers.
Fundamental to efficient management of river basins in order to
improve water quality (and to create sustainable methods of
maintaining the improvement) is the understanding of a wide range
of issues relating to hydrology, chemistry, ecology and economics.
Mott MacDonald has considerable experience in the monitoring and
study of water quality issues, and in the development of detailed
management proposals directed towards the improvement of water
quality. This experience includes development of water quality
monitoring strategies, use of data through water quality modelling
to understand the source and extent of problems, and the
development of solutions to improve water quality, together with
institutional, legislative and training advice to assure the
sustainability of water quality improvements.
Water quality control
Mott MacDonald has extensive experience in carrying out water
quality and pollution control studies for catchments, whole river
basins or for regional areas. These are normally carried out to
determine all sources of pollution, monitor water quality and to
enable clients to manage, control and protect water resources
effectively.
Weirs
We undertake all aspects of weir and barrage engineering: planning,
site investigations, model studies, hydrological studies, sediment
studies, social and environmental assessment, economic analyses,
outline and detailed design, supervision of construction, and
formulation of operating procedures.
