River basin management

Pripyat river basin managementUpper Pripyat, UkraineLarge or small, rural or industrialised, maritime or continental, at Mott MacDonald we have been engaged in all aspects of river basin management worldwide.

In Scotland we are assisting Scottish Water and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency test the impacts of proposed guidance for implementing the Water Framework Directive on 80 catchments.

We are working with governments and river basin management agencies across eastern Europe, Central Asia and China to help them prepare for implementation of the Directive or other legislation which shares similar objectives.

Limpopo river basinFlooding on the Limpopo River, MozambiqueWe assist water utilities and water resource and environmental protection agencies in short and long-term planning, for example assisting develop Drought Plans or undertaking surface and groundwater modelling to plan catchment abstraction management strategies. We work with climate data to understand the present and look to the future, taking climate change into account.

Demand for industry and domestic use continues to grow. As well as assisting in the planning and developing of water resources and the infrastructure to deliver these where and when required we work with the water utilities to optimise their systems so to minimise impact on the river basin. This includes sophisticated tools for determining headroom and outage demands, taking into account asset capacity and condition as well as economic factors.

Integral to our projects' success – in our clients’ eyes – is our ability to call on our considerable and diverse pool of specialists. People with local knowledge; specialists in water resource planning, ecology, landscape, hydraulic structures, economists and social scientists.
