Wastewater treatment

Maribor WwTW, Slovenia Maribor Wastewater Treatment Works, Slovenia Mott MacDonald has extensive worldwide experience in undertaking the design or auditing designs by others of municipal wastewater treatment facilities. Our inputs range from undertaking feasibility studies, to preliminary design through to detailed design work. They cover new builds on greenfield sites and the replacement or upgrading of existing works. We have made significant inputs into PFI and PPP schemes undertaken in the UK and overseas. We also provide designs for industrial effluent plant. Increasingly we are also being asked to consider options for effluent re-use.

Our designs incorporate all the conventional treatment stages, such as preliminary, primary, secondary and tertiary treatment as well as addressing environmental issues such as odour minimisation, containment and abatement. Treatment processes are selected appropriate to the treatment required and to the site circumstances. Where required compact processes or processes producing high quality treated effluents are used, e.g. lamellar separators and BAFF plant, Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBRs) or Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs). The use of such processes has grown rapidly over the past ten years.

Projects are considered on a case-by-case basis to provide solutions that are consistent with available Pilot plant, ChinaPilot plant testing of wastewater from He Xi, Taiyuan, Chinaresources and effluent discharge requirements. They may involve an optioneering exercise to determine the most appropriate and cost-effective solution. The Mott MacDonald approach to wastewater problems makes a feature of understanding the mechanisms affecting the process before making recommendations. This may involve carrying out treatability trials to assess the characteristics of a specific waste, to determine whether a conventional solution is appropriate.

As a result of the Mott MacDonald approach, we have increasingly been asked to apply advanced treatment techniques and innovative design approaches for specific reasons. Typical projects include:

  • Maribor Wastewater Treatment Works, Slovenia. One of the largest environmental projects, including nutrient removal, undertaken in Slovenia in the past few decades. Mott MacDonald, the lender’s engineer, provided review and advisory services throughout the design, construction and commissioning. We were pro-active in ensuring that the advanced technology of the wastewater treatment plant matched the needs of the people and the environment of Maribor with its sensitive river system.
  • BMA4 wastewater treatment works, Bangkok, Thailand. We provided design and procurement advice and reviewed the process, civil and M&E designs for the client. The multi-storey wastewater treatment plant serves the Chatuchak District and parts of Phraya Thai, Huay Kwang and Din Dang Districts of Bangkok, and uses the SBR activated sludge process to provide nutrient removal. The works also incorporate anaerobic digestion of the sludge and odour control facilities.
  • Brighton & Hove WwTW, Southern Water. The detailed design prepared to accompany the planning application provides compact treatment for wastewater and sludge treatment at a restricted coastal site.
  • Carrigrenan WwTP, Cork. Specialist wastewater treatment services were provided for the procurement of this wastewater treatment plant via a “design, build and operate” contract. The plant comprised preliminary and primary treatments with secondary treatment by sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), and anaerobic digestion of sludge followed by thermal drying. We prepared process specifications for the tender documents, including performance testing and guarantees. Further inputs continued through tender evaluation with process advice provided during detail design, construction, testing and commissioning phases.
  • Nutrient Removal Pilot Plant for Yorkshire Water. The pilot plant was designed and constructed to permit the client to investigate various nutrient removal configurations of the activated sludge process and their application at a number of different sites within Yorkshire Water.
  • Nutrient Removal Study, Southern Water. We undertook the feasibility study and outline design of nitrogen removal plant for the Peel Common, Budd’s Farm, Chichester and Thornham STWs. These works discharge to sensitive waters and are to be upgraded as part of AMP4.
