Martha Taylor: hydraulic engineering

Martha working with local engineers in AfghanistanMartha working with local engineers in AfghanistanMartha Taylor has a BEng in Civil Engineering from the University of Liverpool. She joined Mott MacDonald in 2001. She was Winner of the regional ICE Young Members Paper Competition in 2005. Her primary interest lies in the fields of hydraulic engineering, including dams, irrigation, flood control and water supply.

Martha has worked in the UK, Afghanistan, Guyana, Ireland and Ethiopia. Her work in Afghanistan was as a Senior Hydraulic Structures Engineer on the Kunduz River Basin Programme. She was responsible for the hydraulic and structural design of irrigation schemes for 12 major canals, including intake works, head regulators, spill weirs, turnouts, cross regulators and drop structures. She was also responsible for the preparation of tender/contract documents and specifications. The KRBP programme has a substantial emphasis on capacity building, and throughout her work Martha mentored and worked with a large team of Afghan engineers. At the end of her visit she organised a two-day workshop on hydraulic structure design and contracts. This work followed on from a year’s leave of absence from Mott MacDonald when Martha worked with GOAL in Afghanistan. She headed a regional engineering team to complete work on one USAID funded programme, and plan and implement work on a second programme, worth US$1,450,000.
